F1: Russian Sergey Sirotkin will lead Williams in 2018
The Russian pilot Sergey Sirotkin will be the team-mate of the Canadian Lance Stroll this year with Williams. This is what was announced by the British Formula 1 team. Robert Kubica will act as a reserve and test driver.
‘I am very proud to join a prestigious team like Williams,’ said the 22-year-old Russian. ‘I had to work very hard to get here, and I want to thank everyone who made my dream come true, and the team can be sure I will give my best.’
Sirotkin was previously a test pilot with Sauber (2014) and Renault (2016 and 2017). In the GP2 series he finished third in 2015 and 2016. In November, Sirotkin impressed the Williams team’s leadership during the test races in Abu Dhabi. Last year he was a Renault test driver in some training sessions during free practice.
The choice of Sirotkin means that Robert Kubica will have to postpone his return to Formula 1. The 33-year-old Polish, who had to leave Formula 1 in 2011 after a serious accident during a demonstration, has completed several test races in the last few months. He was a serious candidate for Williams.
